When it comes to dishwashers, no one wants to sacrifice cleaning performance to save money. Of course, there’s always a balance between cost and available features, but it’s important that the basics are covered. In the case of dishwashers, that’s pure cleaning ability.

With a bigger budget, you can buy a dishwasher with all the bells and whistles, but having a smaller budget—usually between $300 and $800—doesn't mean you have to put up with inferior cleaning power. You can skip the high-end features and still find an affordable dishwasher that does a great job cleaning dishes.

Here at Reviewed, we care about consumers finding great value, which is why we brought top-rated budget dishwashers into our labs to find which ones are worth purchasing.

After testing the best affordable dishwashers, our evaluation found that the Beko DUT25401X (available at AJ Madison) offers the most value for its price by a large margin. It gets dishes spotless, but it won't clean out your bank account.

The Beko DUT25401X dishwasher features convenient racks that flip down for larger kitchen utensils.

Best Overall
Beko DUT25401X
  • Dimensions: 33.9” x 23.6” x 22.4” (H x W x D)
  • Capacity: 14 place settings
  • Noise level: 48 dBA
  • Third rack: No
  • Energy Star certified: Yes

The Beko DUT25401X offers excellent, energy-efficient performance and an incredibly low price tag.

During testing of its stain removal abilities, the DUT25401X hit slightly above average on its Normal cycle and slightly below average on its Quick cycle. When it came to this dishwasher’s Heavy cycle, it had a near-perfect score. It also performed well in drying tests, with every plate and glass coming out bone dry during its Normal cycle.

The DUT25401X uses far less energy and water than average in the three cycles we tested. In fact, Energy Star rated it as one of its Most Efficient 2022 dishwasher models. It also features a relatively quiet operation thanks to its stainless-steel interior.

We love the upper rack of the Beko DUT25401X for its usability. It features different tines for multiple dishes and offers an angled height adjustment. There are also two height-adjustable shelves/wine racks and an attached mini third rack.

There were some minor aspects about the DUT25401X we didn’t like, though. While the control panel’s LED display is easy to read, the power buttons are poorly designed. Also, it takes effort to push to make desired cycle selections. Still, the DUT25401X offers top-tier performance at a budget price.

  • Capacity: 14 place settings
  • Noise level: 50 dBA
  • Third rack: No
  • Energy Star certified: No

The Maytag MDB4949SKZ is one of the consistently highest user-rated dishwashers on this list, and it is frequently on sale. You won't be disappointed in this dishwasher's Auto cycle, which cleared away over 97% of our test stains.

Where this dishwasher stands out is its Heated Dry mode, which was able to get an entire load of dishes completely dry after a wash cycle. Many affordable dishwashers struggle in particular with completely drying dishes. This Maytag is one of the better affordable options for anyone who hates wet dishes.

  • Capacity: 14 place settings
  • Noise level: 50 dBA
  • Third rack: No
  • Energy Star certified: No

The Bosch 100 Series SHE3AEM2N dishwasher provides good value across the board and is the most affordable entry point into owning a Bosch.

In our testing we found this dishwasher has appropriate cleaning capabilities for its price. Where it shines, though, is in what it offers on top of good cleaning. The SHE3AEM2N gets dishes completely dry after a wash cycle.

It features Bosch's signature high build quality, nice details like the double cutlery basket, and a robust warranty. It even benefits from smart features via the Home Connect app. Any one of these features is rare to see in a dishwasher at this price point, and the SHE3AEM2N has all of them.

The Bosch 100 Series SHE3AEM2N is ahead of the curve in a lot of respects. If you want a good all-arounder that'll last a long time, this model is a great pick.

Product image of Whirlpool WDT750SAKZ
Whirlpool WDT750SAKZ
  • Dimensions: 33.63" x 23.875" x 26.75" (H x W x D)
  • Capacity: 13 place settings
  • Noise level: 47 dBA
  • Third rack: Yes
  • Energy Star certified: No

The Whirlpool WDT750SAKZ is an effective dishwasher that won’t hurt your wallet. With a third rack designed to hold large utensils and cutlery, an automatic leak sensor, and a heated dry option, you’re getting some really useful features at an affordable price.

While the Whirlpool WDT750SAKZ is able to thoroughly remove difficult, baked-on stains, both the Normal and Heavy cycles have extremely long cycle times (nearly three hours and four hours, respectively) so it may be best to typically run this dishwasher overnight. The Quick Wash cycle does stick to its one-hour promise, but is best for less soiled dishes.

For its price, it performs quite well, is reasonably quiet, and has a great look. The dishwasher itself is pretty basic, but if you don’t need a lot of extra bells and whistles, you’ll appreciate the cleaning power and functionality of the Whirlpool WDT750SAKZ.

  • Capacity: 14 place settings
  • Noise level: 53 dBA
  • Third rack: No
  • Energy Star certified: Yes

The Samsung DW80CG4021SR has a sleek, modern design for an affordable dishwasher. Aside from its bold handle, it features an otherwise clean facade with the digital touch controls hidden on the top of the stainless-steel door. Its standard two-rack layout features an adjustable-height upper rack and stemware holders. When it comes to cleaning performance, this dishwasher features several wash programs, including Heavy, Express 60, and Auto, as well as a Sanitize wash option.

The hybrid tub features a stainless-steel-lined door that helps to dampen noise. While it isn’t the quietest dishwasher on this list, its 53 dBA is respectable among budget-friendly dishwashers. If want a good-looking dishwasher that will deliver performance beyond its affordable price point, the Samsung DW80CG4021SR is an excellent buy.

What To Consider When Buying An Affordable Dishwasher

Who would use an affordable dishwasher?

People on a budget who don’t want to settle for a “cheap dishwasher.”

There are plenty of dishwashers that are affordable and clean dishes well, but there are some other things to consider, as well.

Key features

  • Materials: The price of a dishwasher depends on a number of factors, including features and materials. For instance, most of the affordable dishwashers we tested have either stainless-steel tubs or hybrid stainless-steel tubs, not the full plastic you would expect from cheaper models. Typically, dishwashers with stainless-steel tubs dry dishes better and are quieter than models with plastic tubs, but may cost more. However, that won’t impact cleaning ability. To save money and ensure good performance, look for dishwashers with at least some stainless steel present.

  • Features: With affordable dishwashers, you shouldn’t expect the same number of features that you would find in high-end dishwashers, like Wi-Fi connectivity and a third rack. Still, some models in the lower price bracket can have similar features to those you would find in higher-priced dishwashers, like the Whirlpool WDT750SAKZ with its third rack and powerful cleaning.

  • Water and Energy Efficiency: The Energy-Star certification for dishwashers has changed over the past few years, but people who are interested in how much water and energy dishwashers use, be sure to check out the Energy Star Dishwasher Guide to find rated dishwashers.

  • Drying Ability: To reduce energy consumption and improve safety, many manufacturers have eliminated dishwasher heating elements, which can impact drying abilities, especially with plastic items like Tupperware. Instead, manufacturers use different ways to dry dishes. Whether it's accomplished with rinse aid, a built-in heater, a built-in fan, or another method, people expect their dishes to be dry, as well as clean.

  • Finish and Design: Buying a budget dishwasher doesn’t mean that you have to totally sacrifice finish and design. The dishwashers we tested come in a number of finishes, including stainless steel. While you should be able to find a dishwasher that matches your other appliances, be ready to pay more for any finish more sophisticated than black, white, and stainless steel. While some of the dishwashers in our evaluation have control panels on their fronts, others are more sleek in their design, opting for top controls instead.

Care, maintenance, and warranty

While all appliance manufacturers offer at least a one-year limited warranty for dishwashers, which cover replacement parts and labor, some manufacturers offer more. Hisense guarantees its appliances for two years, and Samsung, LG, and Maytag ensure certain parts for up to a decade. However, most warranties won’t apply if you don’t properly care for your appliance. In the case of dishwashers, forgetting to clean the filter is often the biggest culprit of poor performance, so put that on your regular home maintenance schedule.

Why You Should Trust Our Expertise

The Appliances Team at Reviewed has spent many years putting major appliances through their paces. Through standardized testing in a controlled lab environment and using the product just like you would in your own home, we’ve determined the best dishwashers on the market at a variety of price points and values. That means that we can recommend appliances that are bargains at their price points, and appliances that have really useful extra features.

The Tests

A person measures food stains on a white bowl with a measuring tape

At the end of each wash cycle, we determine how much stain has been removed from each dish. Ideally, each dish is 100% clean.

Whether testing high-end dishwashers or models that cost less than $500, we put all dishwashers through a battery of tests that are repeated with the same accuracy and precision for each model. Our evaluation focuses on three major things: performance, features, and usability.

Performance

When considering a dishwasher’s performance, we look at stain removal prowess, cycle time, drying abilities, and redeposit (any food matter that isn’t captured in the filter and lands back on clean dishes).

No one wants to spend hundreds of dollars on a dishwasher that can't get your dishes clean. That’s why we test each dishwasher on the three main cycles—normal, heavy, and quick wash. We loaded dishes stained with tough-to-remove food particles—milk, spinach, egg, oatmeal, meat, and more. After each cycle, we determine how much stain has been removed from the dishes.

Features and Usability

When assessing features and usability, we look at the various cycles, cycle options, and dishwasher specs and determine how useful they are and how easy they are to use.

What Other Reviewers Are Saying About the Best Affordable Dishwashers

The experts consistently include similar models on their lists of best affordable dishwashers. To save you some time and trouble, we’ve gone ahead and done the research for you. From what we can tell, Whirlpool and LG appear repeatedly on best-of lists.

  • Wirecutter: Wirecutter’s top budget dishwasher pick is the Whirlpool WDTA50SAKZ, which is also on our list. Wirecutter highlights the stainless-steel tub and effective wash system, but also noted its particularly long cycle times.
  • Consumer Reports: The Consumer Reports team currently recommends the LG LDFC2423 as their top pick for dishwashers in the $500 range. According to the review, the LG “is a solid dishwasher for its price, offering top-class washing performance and ranking as one of the most energy-efficient models we tested.”
  • Good Housekeeping: GH also highlights LG LDFC2423 for its top pick under $500, noting that it’s rare to find such an affordable model with such high-end touches.

What Owners Are Saying About Our Best Affordable Dishwashers

User comments around the topic of best dishwashers seem to display the typical amount of rancor and infighting. We’re pulling these user reviews from sources like Reddit and large appliance retailers.

  • Reddit /BuyItForLife: Over at Reddit’s BIFL, the top comments all point to Bosch as the dishwasher to buy for the long haul. We certainly agree, as they top our list of the best dishwashers, so if you want the best be sure to check for sales.
  • The most fervent owner-generated recommendations come from The Home Depot and ABT for the Maytag MDB4949SKZ, which is consistently praised for its combination of affordability and effectiveness.

Beyond the usual complaints about receiving a lemon or appliances that don’t last as long as they used to, the most common relevant complaints are control panels that stop working and cycle selections that can be confusing.
